New Book: Ann Halam's "Dr. Franklin's Island"

Roddy Doyle's "Wilderness" had ended. I wasn't expecting that, though.
So for this Homereasing, I decided to write about another book: Ann Halam's "Dr. Franklin's Island".

My apologies.

Chapters 1-5 (pages 1-50)

Semi, the main charecter, was going on a field trip to Quito, the capital of Equador. she and thirty other teenagers were part of a sociation called "Planet Savers".
She met some of her companions, who all seemed to ignore her. For nerds like the trip was for, they all seemed alot 'cooler' than her.
When she got on the plane, she sat next to one of the 'cool' teens- Miranda. She seemed nice, but also like she didn't care much. They said a few words to eachother.
After some time of flying, Semi noticed that the employees started to panic. The plane was going down.
Before she even realized, she was swimming towards a sandy beach, hearing explosions coming from behind.
The plane had crashed into the beach, leavin behind only three survivors: Semi, Miranda and Arnie.
At first, they were all scared, but then got to know eachother better and set up camp. They made up rules, like who should bring water from a nearby river, get some food and improve the camp site.
They went looking for some supplies in the air-plane, but only found a med-kit and a few packed-lunch boxes. They also found a dead body, which floated into the ocean, reminding them that the situation was very critical for them.
Semi and Miranda were getting off fine. Miranda seemed to be very friendly, actually, and knew quite a lot about wilderness. As for Arnie, the only boy, he seemed to be rather obnoxious and negative towards the two. He did things by himself and offended his companions from time-to-time.
Time passed, and the three teens started to get worried about the rescue-team that they were hoping for. Infact, Arnie was building a raft, telling the two that he will leave when it gets done.
As the daily rutine went on for about two weeks, the trio decided that they should venture deeper into the tropical island, because waiting on the beach started to get boring and the hopes that there could be civilization on the island rose.
So, as they went to discover for more food and civil facilities, they got lost. Semi had seen an animal and followed, until she really took a close look- the animal (a wild pig) had human arms! she went back and found others, who at first, didn't believe her. But when she showed them the creature, they started to get suspicious about the island.
In the next day, the girls found out that Arnie was missing. They searced the beach, and couldn't find him- thinking that he went off to te ocean with his raft.
Semi and Miranda didn't know what to do. They thought that maybe Arnie had gone off into the jungle, so they went on.
After hours of travelling, exhausted and desperate, the girls finally made it to a clearing, where there were walls, houses and even cars! But, they were arrested as tresspassers and knocked out.
When they awoke, they seemed to be in a hospital. They were clean and felt a lot better than on the beach, by themselves. Semi thought that it was a dream, or that they were finally rescued and brought to civil lands. Miranda was still very suspicious and anxious about the place.
They met a doctor, who actually looked like a scientist, with two armed men walking a step behind him. He told them that they were kept in here, a secret island. And that his boss was the owner of the island.
He explained that this place is testing on making human-like-animal mutants.

My thoughts:
The book is very, very interesting. I love survival-stories, and this is definetly one of my favorites. The emotion and horror added to the whole concept made my spine shiver. Besides the main idea of the teens surviving, the whole dram and emotion added to it made it even better. It's much better than some movies where I've seen people carrying around guns and always being prepeared for trouble, while being stranded on a mysterioys island. This was about having no experience and bravery, but fright and curiosity.
Again, a very very interesting book!

Wilderness by Roddy Doyle 162-220

Chapter 10 and 11

The the boys were lost at first, but then saw a rail. A rail that was indicating their mother's sleigh. They started shouting "Wild-erness!" until their mother cried it back.
Tom and Johnny found Sandra on a clearing. She had injured her leg and she felt sick. The dogs were in a mess and the sled was broken.
The boys took care of their mother and the dogs. They also set up a campfire.
They all hoped that someone would see the campfire's smoke and ome to rescue them.
Meanhile, the trio chatted and cuddled.
Soon, they fell sleep.

The Kitchen

Gráinne and her mother were in the kitchen. It was dark outside, yet it was about 6pm. Gráinne's mother tried to sound sweet and sound as if she was worried for her, but the teenager kept saying "I'm fine" or ignoring her completely.
Soon, her mother started to cry and Gráinne felt bad. But she didn't do anything.
Gráinne's mother apologized, and answered some of Gráinne's broken-hearted questions. Atleast now they came to a clearing.

The Door

Gráinne's mother was about to leave, and Gráinne herself felt a lot: sadness, happiness, confusion and clearace. And so did her mother.
The girl was offered to come live in New York, and the mother was offered to stay, but both requests were declined.
Suddenly, Gráinne's faher called an said that Sandra and the boys had gone missing.

Chapter 12

Sandra, Tom and Johnny woke up in a cold situation. It was morning, the fire had gone out and the dogs were still a bit drouzy. They chatted and hoped, that they'd be rescued.
And like a miracle, Atki's snowmobile and Kalle's sleigh was heard. The two had come to rescue them. Sandra told them that she couldn't move, and was put onto Kalle's sleigh. Meanwhile the boys got to ride on the snowmobile.
In the airport, everyone united: The parents and the children. Sandra was now in a wheelchair.
The boys had gotten a toy-husky, and told Gráinne that they were getting an actual one. Gráinne said, "Big deal.", which made her father laugh.

My thoughts:
In conclusion, the book was absolutely thrilling. I got to learn alot of new words and the text itself was new to me. I go interested in the charecters and their stories, and everything about them kept me reading.
Even though it ha some hiccups, I loved the book and highly reccomend it.

Roddy Doyle's "Wilderness"- pages 101-161

Tom, Johnny and Kalle had stopped with their sleigh, and were now camping. They were giving dog food and water, and giving them rest, while the dogs panted loudly. Tom and Johnny learned the dogs' names.
After some time, they stated moving again. They were near a new lake, now. Kalle showed them the visitors' house, a wooden one. The boys went in and had hot chocolate, while waiting for others to come.

Hours passed, and most of the people had already gathered into the woodhouse. They were all chatting and dinking hot chocolate. But the boys were concerned.
The only one missing was Sandra. Aki and Kalle had gone searching for her, but no luck.
Then, the boys decided, ignoring all the protests of the adults, that they should go and look for their mother themselves.

Johnny and Tom set he dogs ready, and went off into the forest. It was dark, cold and stormy. The kids experienced alot of pain (cause of the trees, bushes and snow), and were getting hints that they were being followed.

Soon, they found their mother, who had told them that she fell of the edge and broke her leg. The boys helpedher, and set up a campfire, hoping that they would soon be found.

-Meanwhile with Rosemary and Gráinne-

Rosemary tried to pick up conversations with her daughter, but she kept ignoring her, answering with short quotes or telling her mean things, which were mostly caused by the fact that she was heartbroken. There were touching moments, and Gráinne got some answers to her much-waited questions, but due to her short nerves and Rosemary's instant weeping, they couldn't go far with dialouges.
The daughter and mother argued, and they both tried to make eachother clear and heard, and to make sure that the other is understanding their pain and sorrow.

My thoughts:

All of those chapters were really interesting. I wanted to keep reading all the time! The drama rose, and I felt more and more interested in the charecters and story. Since, again, this takesplace in two different situatons, I sometimes tend to get annoyed because the chapters end to soon.
Other than that, this is an amazin book, and I love readng it, for its drama and adventure!

Author's Note:
For some odd reason, my computer wouldn't save the progress I made with this post. So I had to re-write everything 3 times. I hope it's understood.
